The Children Are Unbeatable! Alliance campaigns for the UK to satisfy human rights obligations by modernising the law on assault to afford children the same protection as adults.

Children Are Unbeatable! Alliance - Action

Picture of Virginia IronsideAdvice columnist Virginia Ironside says: "Smacking is wrong because not only does it teach children that it's right for big people to hit little people, but it also teaches children that lack of self-control is perfectly okay. Smacking is violence, and we can't condemn violence in our city centres, and violence in relationships, if we are to at the same time to condone violence in our treatment of children. We only perpetuate the problem."

Save the Children

We Can Work it Out Training Pack

A support package for parent groups and those who work with parents.

This training pack provides materials for a half day workshop, helping parents reflect on how they could manage their children's behaviour without resorting to emotional or physical punishment.

It helps parents, in a supportive environment, consider what behaviour they find challenging; how adults respond when angry; what children see happening; and how children learn challenging behaviour from adults. It goes on to offer advice on how to help children focus on requests from parents, and how to help young children understand and improve their behaviour.

The training pack comes with 20 booklets offering further tips and advice, which parents can take home. Alternatively, the full text of this booklet is available online for you to read, print off and use immediately.

Provides a trainers' half-day workshop for those who work with other people's children: childminders, nursery or family centre workers, playgroup/pre-school workers, teachers, creche workers, and after-school workers or nannies.

The aims of the workshop are: to identify children's behaviour which is challenging to adults; to identify the techniques adults use to control challenging behaviour; and to identify ways adults can reinforce positive behaviour in children.

The pack provides guidance for tutors and a complete section for students to work through and take away, and gives details for further reading and resources.
